Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner so that they could remain alive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. She left the school after just two years to take on a acting career. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines, acting work she longed to do was abyssal. Her next job was as the "hat check" girl for a nightclub until she decided to quit and relocated to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
